The Atlanta Braves agreed to another multiyear contract with a pitcher: a four-year, $16-million deal with John Smoltz. The Braves had already signed four-year contracts with pitchers Greg Maddux, $28 million, and Tom Glavine, $20.5 million.
In other signings, Kansas City Royal third baseman Gregg Jefferies agreed to a one-year contract worth $2.65 million, and Toronto Blue Jay pitcher Todd Stottlemyre agreed to a one-year contract worth $2,325,000.
