Surf and Stars: The Surf Industry Manufacturers Assn., which last year raised $50,000 for environmental groups, hopes to raise $60,000 at its upcoming Waterman’s Ball, set for May 22 at California Scenario Sculpture Gardens in Costa Mesa.
Proceeds from the surf industry’s major social function will benefit the American Oceans Campaign in Santa Monica, the Orange County Marine Institute in Dana Point and the Surfrider Foundation in San Clemente.
The annual black-tie affair will also feature the first Waterman’s Award, to be presented to Hobie Alter, an Orange County surf-industry legend. Alter, 69, introduced the mass-produced, foam-core surfboard in 1958 and later introduced the Hobie Cat catamaran.
Now retired and living in Washington state, Alter will be at the ball to receive his award.
The program will also feature actors Ted Danson and Gregory Harrison, and athletes Karch Kiraly and Steve Timmons. As if that weren’t enough star appeal, pro wrestling legend Hulk Hogan and U.S. Rep. Dana Rohrabacher are listed as “special invitees.”
Tickets are $100 each. For more information, call (714) 760-0784.
