NHL ROUNDUP : Senators Break Record for Rockiest Road

The Ottawa Senators haven’t even been in the NHL one full season and they already have their name in the record book.

They would have much preferred to have it in the victory column.

But having failed to win a single game on the road all season, the Senators set a new standard for futility Saturday night by losing, 7-3, to the Whalers at Hartford. It was Ottawa’s 38th consecutive loss on the road, breaking the mark of 37 set by the 1974-75 Washington Capitals.

The Senators have also lost a neutral-site “road” game, played at Hamilton, Canada, but the NHL does not consider that in the official road record.

The 1974-75 Capitals have the worst overall record in NHL history, 8-67-5 for 21 points, but the Senators at 9-65-4 have already surpassed that.

Pittsburgh 5, Quebec 3--Mario Lemieux continues to play as if he had never been away, adding two goals and an assist at Quebec to help the Penguins extend their club-record winning streak to 13.

Lemieux has scored in his last 13 games and has 43 points in his last 15 games since returning March 2 from cancer treatments.

He has 61 goals and 86 assists overall, increasing his lead over the Buffalo Sabres’ Pat LaFontaine in the individual scoring race to four points.

The loss ended a four-game winning streak for the Nordiques. They have not beaten Pittsburgh since Feb. 26, 1990, a stretch during which they are 0-7-2.

Detroit 5, Vancouver 1--Dallas Drake had a goal and two assists at Detroit as the Red Wings won for the seventh time in their last eight games.

Calgary 3, San Jose 2--Coming in on a line change, Theoren Fleury took a pass from Joel Otto and scored the winner on a breakaway with 1:54 remaining in overtime at Daly City.

From 15 feet out, Fleury fired the puck to the left of Shark goaltender Arturs Irbe for his 31st goal. The loss was the 12th in a row for San Jose.

Winnipeg 6, Edmonton 4--Russian Alexei Zhamnov, Winnipeg’s other rookie sensation, scored twice at Edmonton and added an assist.

Teemu Selanne, the front-runner for rookie of the year, had three assists, figuring in both of Zhamnov’s goals.

Selanne has 73 goals and a total of 125 points, both records for a rookie. Zhamnov has 22 goals and a total of 64 points.

Montreal 3, N.Y. Islanders 2--Brian Bellows and Vincent Damphousse each scored their 38th goal during the third period at Uniondale, N.Y., to enable the Canadiens to come from behind and maintain their dominance over the Islanders.

Montreal is 9-1-1 in its last last 11 games against the Islanders, including a six-game unbeaten streak at Nassau Coliseum. The last Islander home victory over the Canadiens was on Oct. 15, 1988.

The Islanders, playing their second game in as many nights, couldn’t keep the momentum generated by Friday night’s 3-2 overtime victory over the New York Rangers.

Toronto 1, New Jersey 0--Felix Potvin was perfect in net at Toronto and Doug Gilmour scored with less than four minutes to play.

The victory was a franchise-record 42nd for the Maple Leafs. Toronto’s 95 points ties a club record set in 1950-51, a 70-game season.

Chicago 3, St. Louis 3--Brendan Shanahan had two goals and Philippe Bozon scored on a penalty shot for the Blues at St. Louis, but the Blackhawks came from behind three times to earn the tie.

Bozon was awarded the penalty shot when Craig Muni was penalized for throwing his stick at the puck. Bozon’s shot sailed over goaltender Ed Belfour’s left shoulder.

St. Louis had been 0 for 4 in penalty shots.

All of Chicago’s goals were scored on the power play, ending a streak of seven games during which opponents had failed to score against the Blues’ penalty killers.

Philadelphia 6, Tampa Bay 2--The Flyers broke out of their power-play slump at Philadelphia.

The Flyers entered the game with only three goals in their last 54 power-play opportunities, but they scored on four of five chances against the Lightning.

Greg Hawgood and Mark Recchi each had a goal and two assists to help the Flyers end a three-game losing streak.

Boston 3, Buffalo 2--Rookie Ted Donato scored an unassisted goal with 2:18 remaining at Boston to give the Bruins a victory that moved them within a point of Adams Division-leading Montreal and Quebec.
