Top fuel driver Pat Austin, 28, had the fastest speed ever in drag racing, hitting 303.64 m.p.h. during the first round of the NHRA’s Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Ga. Austin’s elapsed time was 4.915 seconds. Kenny Bernstein had the fastest previous speed, a 301.70-m.p.h. pass on March 20, 1992.
Eddie Hill, 57, of Wichita Falls, Tex., won the top fuel title with a run of 4.875 seconds with a speed of 293.63 m.p.h.
Indy car driver John Andretti, making his drag racing debut, eliminated five-time Winston top fuel champion Joe Amato and Tommy Johnson Jr. before losing in the semifinals.
Johnny Force of Yorba Linda won the funny car title, and Warren Johnson beat his son Kurt to win in pro stock.
