Cal State Fullerton swept a Big West Conference softball doubleheader from the University of the Pacific Saturday at Bill Simon Field in Stockton. The victory clinched a share of the conference championship and an automatic berth into the NCAA tournament that begins next weekend.
The Titans (35-19, 25-7), ranked 15th in the nation, tied with Utah State for the conference title. Although Fullerton and Utah State split their four games, the Titans earned the Big West’s automatic NCAA berth because they scored more runs than the Aggies in their four-game series.
Fullerton beat Pacific, 8-0, in Game 1 Saturday. Tiffany Boyd had two hits, including a home run and five runs batted in, and pitched six innings of two-hit relief to earn the victory for the Titans.
Cheryl Longeway scattered eight hits in the second game to lead Fullerton to a 5-1 victory.
Denise DeWalt had four hits and five runs scored, and Melissa Hadfield had four hits and three runs scored in the doubleheader for Fullerton.
