Three Titans Taken in Major League Free-Agent Draft

Three Cal State Fullerton baseball players--shortstop Nate Rodriquez, second baseman Jeremy Carr and outfielder Tony Banks--were selected Friday in the major league free-agent draft.

Rodriquez, a steady defensive player who batted .280 with 26 runs and 28 runs batted in this season and had 30 career sacrifice hits, was a 21st-round pick of the Kansas City Royals.

Carr, who hit .351 with 41 stolen bases, 58 runs and 27 RBIs and was a Collegiate Baseball third-team All-American, was a 23rd-round pick of the Philadelphia Phillies.

Banks, who hit .268 with a conference-leading 14 home runs, 49 RBIs and 34 walks, was a 23rd-round pick of the Oakland Athletics. Banks and Rodriquez attended Laney College of Oakland, and Carr played at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo.

Rancho Santiago pitcher Ryan Filbeck was drafted in the 10th round by the Florida Marlins, according to his father, Leon.

Filbeck, a former Esperanza standout, was 8-1 this past season and helped Rancho Santiago win the State title. He signed a letter of intent May 19 with Texas Tech.
