SETH ETHERTON (Pitcher), Dana Hills

The main reason the Dolphins finished second in the South Coast League. Also had seven home runs and a .306 batting average. Won his last five decisions. Pitched a one-hitter against San Clemente and a three-hitter against Capistrano Valley.

ALFREDO GARCIA (Pitcher), Buena Park

Carried the Coyotes into the Southern Section Division II playoffs. His strikeouts-to-walks ratio was impressive but so is the fact that he gave up only seven runs. Pitched five shutouts, including three in a row at the end of the season. Also hit two home runs.

JIM LIVERNOIS (Pitcher), La Quinta

Won more games in a season than any county pitcher since Dan Baker (Tustin) won 14 in 1990. Also has been effective in relief with five saves. At the plate, he is hitting .376 with 29 runs scored, one home run, 19 RBIs and 13 stolen bases.

MIKE McDONALD (Pitcher), Mater Dei

Pitched a no-hitter and a one-hitter this season in consecutive starts. He is not overpowering but has good control and is a fierce competitor. Also hit .395 with three home runs and 22 RBIs. Lost only three games in three years on the varsity.

STEPHAN HAGINS (Catcher), University

He was ranked as the 17th-best high school player in the nation by Baseball America. His senior season did nothing to change that opinion. Hagins was sixth in the county with a .507 batting average despite the fact teams tried to pitch around him.

RYAN JONES (First Baseman), Irvine

He was the best player on a team loaded with talent. Improved enough to be a second-round draft choice by the Toronto Blue Jays. Led the team in almost every offensive category. Was also a first-team all-county pick in football as a linebacker.

DEREK BAKER (Infielder), Tustin

A powerful hitter, he led the Tillers into the Southern Section Division III title game. He led the county in RBIs during the regular season. A three-year letterman. As a freshman, he made his varsity debut with a bases-loaded double.

JEFF FRANKEL (Infielder), Mater Dei

A consistent player who provided an offensive spark for the Monarchs. He led the team in runs with 24. He was frequently at his best in big games. Had a two-run single to help beat Esperanza this season. He has signed with Santa Clara.

PONCHO RUIZ (Infielder), Esperanza

Esperanza’s success can be attributed to Ruiz, who missed much of last season with an injury. With him, the Aztecs are in the Division I title game. Led team in home runs, doubles and triples and was second in RBIs. A solid defensive player with great range.

BOBBY BRITO (Outfielder), Cypress

Had an outstanding freshman season. Finished second in the county with a .542 batting average and third with 33 RBIs. A big reason the Centurions finished third in the Empire League. Played on Cypress team that reached the 1990 Little League World Series.

STEVE RIVERA (Outfielder), Ocean View

A dangerous hitter who has power and speed. He stole 32 bases this season. Set school career records for hits (106), stolen bases (70), runs (89) and batting average (.460). He had seven hits in two games in May to help the Seahawks clinch a playoff berth.

SCOTT SEAL (Outfielder), Irvine

A good hitter and a solid defensive player with a strong arm. Did not have a home run but hit seven in 1992. He was drafted in the 23rd round by Kansas City. He has signed with UCLA. Also was named all-county in football as a running back.

BRIAN PONCHAK (Designated Hitter), Fountain Valley

A big reason the Barons were Sunset League champions. A powerful hitter who also was the team’s No. 1 pitcher. He was 9-1 with a 2.50 ERA and 40 strikeouts. He was named the league’s co-most valuable player. He has signed with USC.

TOM LOUIE (Utility), Irvine

He was the ace for the Vaqueros as a pitcher (12-3, two saves, 2.23 ERA) and an equally valuable hitter. He pitched a no-hitter and combined on a second. Beat Miami Westminster Christian, then the No. 1 team in the nation, in the Upper Deck tournament.
