AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL : Palmdale East’s Garcia Thwarts 9th-Inning Rally

Right-hander Joe Garcia struck out Dave Supple and Francisco Dongo with runners at first and third in the bottom of the ninth inning Wednesday after a run had scored to secure Palmdale East’s 4-1 victory over Van Nuys East in the opening round of the District 20 American Legion playoffs at Birmingham High.
Garcia (3-0) went the distance, striking out seven.
Palmdale East (14-8) broke a scoreless tie in the sixth inning with a run-scoring single by Bob Harmon and an unearned run.

Woodland Hills West 18, Valley North 7--Mike Glendenning hit two three-run home runs and drove in eight runs as Woodland Hills West eliminated Valley North in a losers’ bracket game at Birmingham. Left-hander Randy Wolf pitched six innings to earn the victory and also hit a two-run home run.
