CANOGA PARK : Council Backs Federal Funding of Space Station

The Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday backed continued federal funding for the nation’s space station program to protect 1,300 workers at the Rocketdyne plant in Canoga Park from layoffs.
On a 11-0 vote, the council passed a resolution urging congressional approval of a proposed $2.6-billion spending plan for the program. Funding is believed to be in jeopardy due to federal budget constraints.
Rocketdyne’s Canoga Park unit stands to lose a $250-million contract if the space station program is axed. Rocketdyne, a division of Rockwell International Inc., builds the electrical power system for the space station.
The House has narrowly voted to back the space program, but the Senate has not yet voted on it.
Councilwoman Laura Chick, who represents the southwest San Fernando Valley, introduced the resolution. Rocketdyne Vice President George Hallinan praised the council action, saying it will be helpful in trying to win congressional support for the space station.
