INGLEWOOD : Judge Blocks Exploratory Oil Drilling at Cemetery
- Share via
A judge on Friday blocked a plan to drill exploratory oil wells in an Inglewood cemetery, saying an environmental impact report must be conducted to address such issues as noise and earthquake hazards.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Diane Wayne agreed with some people who live near the cemetery and a Los Angeles-area activist group, Coalition Against the Pipeline, that there is substantial evidence the drilling could significantly affect the environment.
The drilling, to be done by Vortex Energy and Minerals, was approved by the Inglewood City Council last year but has not begun. It would occur in Inglewood Park Cemetery, near the Newport-Inglewood fault zone and Inglewood’s border with Los Angeles.
