WORLD IN BRIEF : BOLIVIA : Ex-U.S. Diplomat Dies in Rescue Bid

A former U.S. diplomat in Bolivia and Chile who was an expert outdoorsman died while searching for two missing Americans in the Andes mountains. Two U.S. Embassy officials were with Stan Shepard when their vehicle slipped off a snow-covered road south of La Paz. The officials were hospitalized in stable condition. The two missing American mountaineers returned safely to La Paz, the U.S. Consulate said. Shepard was press attache in La Paz between 1980 and 1983. He later served in the U.S. Embassy in Chile until his retirement in 1991.
