Wallace Wins, Ends Martin’s Streak at Four

Rusty Wallace won the Miller Genuine Draft 400 at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway on Saturday night.
Wallace led three times for 206 laps, including the final 134 on Richmond’s three-quarter-mile, D-shaped layout.
It gave Wallace four Winston Cup victories and two second-place finishes in the six races run this season on tracks of less than one mile in length.
Mark Martin, seeking his fifth consecutive victory, finished sixth.

Teammates Jack Baldwin and Scott Sharp had a big day, Baldwin winning the SCCA Trans-Am race at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, and Sharp wrapping up his second series championship with a fifth-place finish.

Nigel Mansell set a Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course qualifying record as he out-dueled provisional pole-winner Paul Tracy to take the top starting spot for today’s Pioneer Electronics 200 Indy car race. Mansell had a fast last lap of 118.372 m.p.h. to take the pole from Tracy (118.138).

Alain Prost won the pole position for today’s Italian Grand Prix at Monza, Italy. Prost’s fast lap on the 3.604-mile circuit was 1 minute 21.179 seconds at an average speed of 159.822 m.p.h.
Boxing
International Boxing Federation featherweight champion Tom (Boom Boom) Johnson, fighting without having to worry about losing his title, scored a unanimous decision over Sugar Baby Rojas at Miami.
Although it was sanctioned as a title fight, Johnson (33-2-1) would have kept his belt if he had lost because Rojas (37-7-1) weighed in at 129 3/4 pounds, well over the 126-pound limit.
Track and Field
American Steve Fritz won an invitational decathlon in a meet at Talence, France.
Fritz came from behind on the second day to score 8,317 points. Frenchman Christian Plaziat was second with 8,235.
Fritz was in third place at the end of the first day and still trailed Plaziat by five points at the end of eight events. Fritz moved in front in the javelin with a throw of 205-5.
Harness Racing
Riyadh led wire to wire to win the $328,305 Messenger Stakes, the second leg of the triple crown for 3-year-old pacers, at Rosecroft Raceway in Ft. Washington, Md.
Riyadh won the first leg, the $432,800 Cane Pace at Yonkers Raceway, last month and needs to win the $575,000 Little Brown Jug at Delaware, Ohio, on Sept. 23 to become the eighth pacer to win the triple crown and the first since Ralph Hanover in 1983.
Soccer
The U.S. national soccer team has officially opened its $3.3-million World Cup training center in Mission Viejo. It’s the team’s first permanent practice facility.
The seven-acre center has a 3,800-square-foot clubhouse and will serve as the club’s headquarters until August of 1994. The national team has been training at the facility since January.
Football
Players hit the turf and spectators dived for cover as shots from a drive-by shooting rang out during a high school football game in Fairfield, Ala.
Officials called Friday night’s Fairfield-Midfield game at Fairfield High after the gunfire started with 1:46 left in the game. Witnesses said the shots appeared to come from outside the stadium.
There had been no arrests in the shooting Saturday, said a police spokesman.
Names in the News
Brian Hayward, a former goaltender with Winnipeg, Montreal, Minnesota and San Jose, has been hired as the commentator on Mighty Duck television broadcasts and will also work as an off-ice goaltending coach. . . . Shannon Miller, the 1993 world gymnastics champion, was given the Master of Sport Award by the USA Gymnastics Congress.
