WHAT’S THE CHP CODE FOR STRANDED ELEPHANT?: What does a freeway motorist do when he sees an elephant on the side of the 405? Get on the car phone, of course. Police got the call at about 9 a.m. Saturday and found that a truck trailer carrying Neely--a 1,000-pound baby elephant--was stranded near the Burbank exit. The trailer, being used by an entertainment company, had broken an axle. While awaiting a replacement, Neely was led by his trainer to nearby Woodley Avenue Park in Van Nuys, where he munched on tree leaves and “communed with nature,” according to police.
DEADLY TOOL: Helpful household tool or implement of death? The common screwdriver is both, it seems, given that it has figured in several violent acts recently in the San Fernando Valley. (B5) . . . Last week alone, in North Hills, a woman was arrested for stabbing another woman with a screwdriver and a man was shot to death by police who thought the screwdriver he was holding against his son’s throat was a knife.
NAILIN’ IT: Hundreds of volunteer workers fanned out across the San Fernando Valley on Saturday for Community Care Day, an annual event sponsored by the United Way. (B1) . . . The volunteers restored and repaired facilities used by a variety of Valley service agencies and schools. Among the organizations receiving aid were Activities for Retarded Children and Pacoima Elementary School.
SWEET VICTORY: It was more than a victory for Antelope Valley High’s football team. It marked an end to years of frustration and embarrassment. The Antelopes’ 15-14 nonleague victory over powerful Loyola on Friday night launched a wild celebration among the school’s supporters that extended into Saturday (C12) . . . Loyola, ranked sixth in the state, had never lost to the Antelopes in eight previous meetings.
