To the befuddlement and amusement of New York pedestrians, someone is doctoring electric crosswalk signs to flash commands such as REPENT/SIN and CONFORM/CONSUME instead of WALK/DON’T WALK. Traffic officials have a direction of their own: STOP. “Someone could get hurt if they’re looking at one of those signs while trying to cross the street,” said Lisa Daglian, Transportation Department spokeswoman. Whoever is switching the crosswalk messages faces charges of theft of government property and tampering with the property, Daglian said.
