WASHINGTON — The 7 1/2-ton Statue of Freedom will be airlifted back on top of the U.S. Capitol dome on Oct. 23, nearly six months after it was removed for repairs, the Architect of the Capitol’s office announced Thursday.
The 19 1/2-foot-tall statue of a woman holding a sword and shield was lifted off the dome by helicopter May 9 and placed in a plaza in front of the Capitol for restoration.
