2 Views on Carl Karcher’s Power Struggle

I have watched with great anticipation the struggle for power between Carl’s Jr. and Carl Karcher from its very beginning. I used to be a regular customer (at least once a week) at Carl’s Jr. until 1991, when I first became aware of Mr. Karcher’s bigoted, self-righteous world view.
I enjoyed Carl’s Jr. as an option for some healthy fast-food items. However, I joined the boycott of Carl’s Jr.--sometimes causing great inconvenience--because of Mr. Karcher’s personal bigoted views, particularly with regard to people who are gay and lesbian. I hope part, if not all, of Karcher’s financial problems are a result of the boycott and punishment for his unacceptable treatment of human beings who happen to be different from himself.
Today, bigotry is unacceptable to most people. Just ask the state of Colorado.
My suggestion to the Carl’s Jr. company if they want to ensure a profitable future and be a responsible business in society is to buy out Mr. Karcher and, even if this is not possible:
* Establish a strong corporate policy of non-discrimination that includes but is not limited to sexual orientation.
* Publicly apologize for all (of the firm’s), including Mr. Karcher’s, offenses to the gay and lesbian community.
* Pledge and contribute charitable support to gay and lesbian community services organizations.
* Encourage gays, lesbians and our supportive friends to end the boycott and invite us to return to your restaurants as needed--and welcomed--customers and employees.
I personally know I would like to return as a regular customer and do so without getting sick at the thought of Mr. Karcher profiting from my patronage.

About the story “Karcher’s Fateful Hiring Began His Own Demise” (Oct. 3): I wonder if, when Ken Olsen, Betsy Sanders, Peter Churm and Dan Holden wake up each morning, they each can honestly look at their own selves in the mirror and say: “I’ve followed the golden rule. I’ve treated Carl Karcher exactly how I’d like to be treated.” Very doubtful--unless their arrogance, greed and lust for power have also gotten in the way of their conscience.
This absolute travesty of what is morally right can only lead to disaster. Their grounds for Carl Karcher’s dismissal is that he just wouldn’t let go. It’s that tenaciousness and fight for what is right which sets Carl apart and heads above all the others who are tunneling their way to the top for the sake of pure power.
Look around, everyone. How many of us worked our way through high school or college working at one of the Jrs. If it wasn’t for Carl Karcher, we may not be where we are today. Wings of hospitals, high schools, libraries, etc. wouldn’t be standing if it weren’t for Carl Karcher.
Sad as his face might be from the hurt knowing that those he trusted and, yes, loved, have turned on him, we all know that Carl can look himself in the mirror each morning and without a doubt say, “I’ve treated all others exactly how I’d like to be treated.”
And when all is said and done, isn’t that what life should be all about?
