Bellflower : 5% Utility-Users Tax OKd to Take Effect in December

A divided City Council voted this week to impose Bellflower’s first utility-users tax in hopes of raising $2.5 million a year to pay for more sheriff’s deputies, street repairs and tree-trimming.
Mayor Bob Stone, Mayor Pro Tem Ken Cleveland and Councilman Bill Pendleton voted for the 5% tax. Council members John Ansdell and Ruth Gilson opposed the plan.
The tax, which is scheduled to go into effect in December, will cost the average household about $5 a month, city officials said.
City law also was modified Monday night to require a review of the utility-users tax every year. The council will be required to conduct a public hearing each December, rather than every three years, to continue the levy.
