GARDEN GROVE — Jeff DePippo and Damien Cook each scored two touchdowns as Pacifica defeated La Quinta, 26-7, in a Garden Grove League game Thursday at Bolsa Grande High.
The Mariners (4-4, 3-2 in league) used their option offense to out-rush the Aztecs, 218-49.
Cook opened the scoring with a two-yard run late in the first quarter. After La Quinta scored on a three-yard run by Jason Gondringer, DePippo gave Pacifica the lead for good with a one-yard run. That touchdown capped a 73-yard drive, which featured 10 consecutive running plays.
Pacifica Coach Bill Craven said his team relies on the run because of DePippo and Cook. “We ask a lot of both them,” Craven said. “Jeff makes things happen and Damien’s very durable. We go to them a lot.”
The Mariners led, 12-7, at halftime, but Cook, who finished with 124 yards in 19 carries, made it 19-7 with a 22-yard run with 7 minutes 22 seconds left in the third quarter. DePippo, the Mariner quarterback, finished the scoring with a 32-yard run up the middle with 9:20 to play. He rushed for 57 yards.
La Quinta (2-6, 1-4) had trouble moving the ball against the Mariners. Running back Watson Visuwan, the Aztecs’ leading rusher, gained only 20 yards. He was more effective as a receiver, catching four passes for 67 yards.
