Foothill Beats Villa Park to Win Water Polo Title
The over-the-hill rivalry between the Villa Park and Foothill water polo teams was as intense as ever Wednesday at Foothill when the Knights scored four goals in the final quarter to defeat Villa Park, 8-5, and capture the Century League championship.
Early in the game, Villa Park (16-9, 4-1) looked determined to stop David Hay from using his size advantage at the two-meter position and sagged into the middle each time he touched the ball. This opened up the perimeter for Foothill, and Brian Brown scored twice to open a 2-0 lead.
Kevin Bobzien cut the deficit to one with a backhand goal late in the first quarter, but Hay got the ball in front of the net and scored to give Foothill a 3-1 lead.
After Bobzien added his second goal 23 seconds later on a hard shot from the left side, Cabot Weaver took a pass from Matt Schuler and scored to give Foothill a 4-2 lead after three quarters.
Another goal by Bobzien cut the lead to 4-3, but the Knights scored three consecutive goals and took a 7-3 lead with 2:44 remaining.
Bobzien scored his fourth and fifth goals of the game in the final minutes before being ejected for misconduct on Hay with five seconds left.
