World IN BRIEF : MOROCCO : 1st Jewish Minister Since ’57 Is Named

The government named by King Hassan II includes Morocco’s first Jewish Cabinet minister since 1957. Serge Berdugo, 55, the new tourism minister, is president of the Jewish Communities Council, which represents the estimated 8,000 Jewish citizens in the country. He is also president of the World Assembly of Moroccan Jewry. The last Jewish minister was Dr. Leon Benzaquen, who served in the first post-independence government from 1955 to 1957.
