Thefts Caused by Poor Values, Not Poverty

As a fellow teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District, I respect and admire Donna Schoenkopf’s dedication to her students. Through her hard work, many children now see a future for themselves where they may not have before (“Hope, Joy & Hard Lessons,” Dec. 14).
I must, however, take exception to Schoenkopf’s discussion with her pupils regarding the theft of their TV, VCR and computer. She elicited from her students that the thieves stole the equipment “because they didn’t have a job and they were poor.”
Phooey. The burglars didn’t steal because they lacked money. They stole because they lacked values. Rich or poor, employed or jobless, educated or illiterate, values are what really matter.
