HARBOR AREA : Quake Knocks Crime off Its Foundations

Crime was curbed dramatically in the Harbor area, as well as the rest of Los Angeles, as police stepped up patrols following the earthquake last week.
Patrols were doubled at the Harbor Station to prepare for potential quake-related problems, said Sgt. Paul Enox.
Some crimes--including burglary, robbery and auto theft--were reduced by half or more. For example, burglaries from vehicles dropped from 46 last year to 18 reported at the same time this year. And home burglaries were down from 40 to 21.
All police cars were deployed in San Pedro, Wilmington, Harbor City and Harbor Gateway, and all personnel worked 12-hour shifts, with some working extra days.
