‘Hot Shots Part Deux’

For this diverting, silly 1993 release, Charlie Sheen got in super shape to send up Sylvester Stallone and his “Rambo” movies. Actually, director Jim Abrahams and writer Pat Proft spoof no fewer than 30 pictures in this fizzy summer comedy in which Sheen’s indomitable, hopelessly square, sober-sided Topper Harley is the only man capable of rescuing American hostages, plus two sets of unsuccessful rescuers from Saddam Hussein. Abrahams and Proft admirably deflate those action movies that exploit violence in the name of a pious, if dubious, patriotism. At the same time, their nonstop throwaway humor keeps spirits lifted and smiles on our faces (HBO Saturday at 8 p.m.).
