Police will conduct a motorist safety checkpoint at Westminster Boulevard and University Street today with the help of members in a local DARE program.
Eight students from the Westminster School District will help pass out safety and literature on drunk driving in memory of a fellow student who was killed by a drunk driver.
Helen Stacey Intermediate School student Jeff Martinez was struck and killed at the Westminster and University intersection last year. He had been heading home from school on his skateboard, district spokeswoman Audrey Brown said.
During the checkpoint’s operation, about 3,000 cars traveling west on Westminster Boulevard are expected to be stopped between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., she said.
