The Claremont Colleges were surprised to receive 12,000 donated books this month from the William A. and May Lusher Bryan estate.
William Lusher, a Los Angeles resident who received his bachelor’s degree from Cal State L.A., spent 40 years building a comprehensive library on philosophy and religion.
“None of us have any idea at all why he gave the books to us,” said Jay German, a Claremont Colleges spokesman. “We’re baffled and overwhelmingly grateful.”
The books, which were donated to the Claremont Graduate School, will be placed among the general collection in the Honneld-Mudd Library.

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, a Catholic girls’ school, is asking the city for permission to double the size of its hillside facilities to cope with crowding and allow for a new curriculum of arts and sports.
The plan for the 375-student school at 440 Saint Katherine Drive in La Canada Flintridge calls for a student activities center, enlargement of an auditorium to become a performing arts center, two lighted sports fields, additional parking and new classrooms and offices.
