COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : UCLA : Unhappy Donahue Extends Practice
- Share via
Unhappy with his team’s conditioning and concerned about his running back situation, UCLA Coach Terry Donahue extended practice, employing different units in a scrimmage and working on play-calling.
It was the last practice of two-a-day drills.
Running back coach Wayne Moses was a lonesome assistant, with only five players to tutor: four freshmen and a sophomore from the scout team.
The Nos. 1 and 2 tailbacks, Sharmon Shah and Derek Ayers, watched from the sideline, along with the Nos. 1 and 2 fullbacks, James Milliner and Daron Washington.
Shaun Williams, who ran a few plays, has a groin pull.
Fullback Jevone Moore, a sophomore walk-on, was the most experienced of Moses’ charges. Freshmen Jarvis Watson, Akil Davis and Greg Ford were the others.
Donahue said he expects Milliner and Washington to be back, but he’s concerned about Shah, whose knee is not responding to treatment, and Ayers, whose injury is worse than first thought.
If the Bruins had to play Tennessee this Saturday, Donahue said, the tailback rotation would be Washington and Williams, with Milliner and Ford at fullback.
Today’s scheduled scrimmage will probably have to be modified because of a lack of available running backs, and there is concern that anything but a full contact workout could be detrimental to everyone.
“Your defense needs tackling under game conditions,” said Donahue, who added that he could not remember sending a team into a season-opening game without at least one full scrimmage.

Scott Fitterer, who never threw a pass as a fourth-string quarterback, has transferred to Louisiana State, where he will play football and baseball. Fitterer pitched long relief for the Bruins and reportedly has a 90-m.p.h. fastball.
