World IN BRIEF : RWANDA : Refugee Who Urged Return Killed in Zaire
- Share via
Hutu zealots killed another Hutu refugee who had urged Rwandans to return home, continuing a deadly campaign of intimidation in Zaire’s teeming refugee camps. The unidentified man was beaten and stoned to death Saturday in the Kitaku refugee camp, Ray Wilkinson, a spokesman for the Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, said. Three other refugees were killed at Magunga camp, 13 miles west of Goma, in fights with Hutu bandits trying to steal plastic sheeting to ward off rain, Wilkinson said. Relief workers say Hutu extremists are trying to undermine U.N. efforts to get the 840,000 refugees in the Goma area to return to Rwanda.
