Whittier Christian 21, Los Angeles Murphy 18--Whittier Christian running back Nick Valdez rushed for 143 yards in 28 carries and scored two touchdowns to give the Heralds a comfortable 21-0 lead after three quarters at Whittier College.
L.A. Murphy quarterback Danny Ragsdale threw for 270 yards, 175 in the second half, and three fourth-quarter touchdowns, but Whittier Christian (3-0) hung on.
Valdez scored on runs of seven and four yards to give the Heralds a 14-0 first-quarter lead.
Whittier Christian increased its lead to 21-0 when Kaipo Takahashi made a leaping catch of a Andrei Roudenko 18-yard touchdown pass.
Early in the fourth quarter, Ragsdale completed a 27-yard touchdown pass to Adrian Guillement. Ragsdale then connected with Kenneth Hunt 1:05 later on a 24-yard pass. He then hit Guillement again with a nine-yard scoring pass with 44 seconds left in the game.
Jason McCleary and Jimmy Cuccia had interceptions for Whittier Christian; Josh Loera and Chris Coppes recovered fumbles.
