COVINA: The City Council ignored threats of another recall Tuesday and gave final approval to an 8.25% utility tax. More than 300 people crowded into City Hall to see the council vote 4 to 1 for the tax to cover a $2.3-million deficit and restore some services. Councilman John M. Wilcox dissented. Anti-tax group leaders vowed to start a recall drive against Mayor Thomas M. O’Leary, Mayor Pro Tem Linda Sarver and Councilman Thomas Falls.
IRWINDALE: A public hearing on Oct. 27 will address a request by United Rock to deepen two quarry pits from 150 to 275 feet; after the hearing, the City Council will vote on the project.
WEST COVINA: The library will open a self-service book checkout on Tuesday. The computerized service will allow library users to bypass long lines to check out books on their own.
