Countywide : Religious Diversity Conference Planned at Mission

Hoping to increase religious tolerance, a group of local clergy has planned the first-ever Orange County Religious Diversity Fair to be held at Mission San Juan Capistrano.
The seven-hour conference, scheduled for Nov. 5, will offer informational sessions on eight faiths: Judaism, Islam, Catholicism, several mainline Protestant faiths, Buddhism, Bahaism, Christian Science and Hinduism.
“I hope (participants) become more knowledgeable of religions other than their own,” said Rabbi Allen Krause of Temple Beth El in Aliso Viejo, the conference’s primary organizer. “When we know more about each other we have a better chance of being more understanding and less judgmental.”
Participants can choose among discussion groups ranging from encouraging youth involvement in religious activities, discounting myths about evangelical Christians, exploring theology and discovering the roles music and ritual play in religion.
Prayer services in the different faiths also will be offered, with an ecumenical closing celebration planned for 3:30 p.m.
The conference also will include tours of the mission, 31550 Camino Capistrano.
