Cerritos Valley Christian 26, Whittier Christian 20 (tie-breaker)--After Valley Christian quarterback Kirk Saarloos dashed 10 yards into the end zone to take a 6-0 lead in the tie-breaker, Jonathon De Bie intercepted a Garrett Estabrook pass to clinch a victory for the Crusaders at Whittier College.
The tie-breaker came as a result of a 20-yard touchdown pass to Keith Van Essen from Saarloos with 36 seconds left to play to tie the score, 20-20.
Whittier Christian (5-3, 1-2) dominated most of the game, scoring on a 60-yard run by Jimmy Cuccia and a two-yard run by Nick Valdez.
Valley Christian’s only first-half score came on a five-yard touchdown run by Jason Wilkinson, set up by Mike Cunningham’s 85-yard kickoff return.
The Heralds took a 20-7 lead when Valdez scored on a 27-yard run with 5:23 left to play.
The Crusaders (7-1, 3-0) bounced back with a nine-yard touchdown run by Cunningham two minutes later.
Three penalties forced the Heralds to punt and a 28-yard return by Cunningham brought Valley Christian to Whittier Christian’s 31-yard line. The return set up Saarloos’ pass to Van Essen five plays later.
