The City Council has approved a new underground utility district along 4th Street between French Street and the Santa Ana Freeway that would move existing utility, telephone and cable lines underground.
At its regular meeting last week, the council unanimously approved the district, which is designed to improve the appearance and safety of the area.
The improvements will begin in May and be completed within 12 months, a staff report shows.
The $1.1-million cost of the project will be paid by Southern California Edison, although the owners of 59 properties will be required to upgrade the utility connections on their property. Most of those owners will pay about $800, although a few may pay as much as $5,000, the report shows.
