Don’t Be Pound Foolish

Many who seek pets prefer the lower cost and good feeling of rescuing an animal from a pound or shelter.
Mixed-breed dogs can be healthier and more even-tempered than purebreds. But in picking a mutt, experts recommend using as much caution as when buying from a breeder. At the shelter, ask to visit with the dog away from the caged area and barking dogs. Take the animal to the vet before taking it home and falling in love with it.
Shyness may be an indication of abuse. But this shouldn’t necessarily deter prospective owners. “Just because a dog has a bad background, doesn’t mean it’s a bad dog,” says author Warren Eckstein. “It may just need some tender love and care. Sometimes abused dogs turn out to be the best dogs in the world.”
