WASHINGTON — Rep. Richard A. Gephardt (D-Mo.) underwent surgery to remove his gallbladder Thursday, a day after he was chosen by fellow House Democrats as minority leader when the new Congress convenes in January.

The 53-year-old lawmaker had first suffered abdominal pains on Tuesday and tests revealed the presence of gallstones.
