*** 1/2, VARIOUS ARTISTS, “Double Feature: ‘Reservoir Dogs’ and ‘Pulp Fiction’ ” MCA
Short of popcorn and the videos themselves, this two-CD set gives fans of Quentin Tarantino and rock ‘n’ roll everything they could want--music and dialogue from both movies plus a 20-page booklet in which the director talks about the use of music in his films.
The main attraction is the “Pulp Fiction” soundtrack, which offers an exhilarating mix of music and dialogue from the viciously funny movie. We get such oldies as Dick Dale’s surf classic “Miserlou,” Al Green’s seductive “Let’s Stay Together” and the Statler Brothers’ whimsical “Flowers on the Wall,” all sandwiched between John Travolta’s inspired guide to ordering Quarter-Pounders in Paris and Samuel L. Jackson’s feverish Bible quotations.
In addition, the disc showcases Maria McKee’s “If Love Is a Red Dress (Hang Me in Rags)” and Urge Overkill’s version of Neil Diamond’s “Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon.”
Second billed is the “Reservoir Dogs” soundtrack, which serves up an eclectic blend of songs--Blue Swede’s “Hooked on a Feeling” to Stealer’s Wheel’s “Stuck in the Middle With You”--as part of a running radio broadcast.
The booklet--in which Tarantino relates how he often writes scenes with the music in mind--is a delightful bonus that helps offset the marketing greed of spreading 70 minutes of music over two discs. Lights, action, stereo!
New albums are rated on a scale of one star (poor), two stars (fair), three stars (good) and four stars (excellent).
