WOMEN’S BASKETBALL : Washington’s Run Beats UCLA

Laure Savasta scored 20 points and Rhonda Smith had 19 points and 12 rebounds Saturday as 15th-ranked Washington defeated UCLA, 81-68, in Seattle.
During the Huskies’ decisive 21-6 run in the second half that put them ahead for good, the Bruins hit only two field goals in nine minutes.
UCLA twice cut Washington’s lead to seven points in the game’s final four minutes but could get no closer.
Washington (13-4, 3-1 in the Pac-10 Conference) forced 26 turnovers, 12 on steals.
Kisa Hughes had 21 points and nine rebounds for the Bruins (6-7, 1-3), who have lost five of their last seven games.
Washington St. 62, USC 61--Despite Karleen Shields’ 24 points and Tina Thompson’s 15, the No. 20 Trojans (8-4, 1-3) managed to turn a five-point halftime lead into a one-point loss to the Cougars (9-4, 2-2) in Pullman.
