Fraud Charges Filed: California Atty. Gen. Dan Lungren filed a complaint Thursday against World Rio Corp., distributor of hair straightener products Rio Hair Naturalizer System and Rio Hair Naturalizer System With Color Enhancer. San Diego-based World Rio sells the products, which are imported from Brazil, primarily to African Americans. Thousands of customers have complained of hair loss, burned hair and scalps or hair that turned green as a result of using the product. The California Department of Health Services has embargoed 145,000 units of the product. But the attorney general said the company continues to accept orders and run infomercials soliciting money even though it has no product to sell.
