Obituaries : * Art Mahan; Rancher From Pioneer Family

Art Mahan, a Moorpark rancher and a member of a Ventura County pioneer family, died Sunday of pneumonia. He was 85.
Mahan was born in Santa Paula in 1910, the third child of Ralph and Amelia Mahan. His great-grandparents, John and Rebecca Mahan, came to Camarillo in 1867 and built their ranch on what is now the Koll-Leonard Business Park.
His great-grandfathers, John Mahan and Jeremiah Sisson, created the Pleasant Valley School District in 1868.
Mahan was described as an outstanding athlete at Moorpark High School. As football captain, he guided the school to the 1928 County Championships in both football and basketball.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Bernice LeRoy Mahan; sons Ralph of Somis and Kieth of Modesto; daughter Gwyn Goodman of Somis; sister Lila Stephens of Ventura; sister-in-law Marjorie Mahan of Camarillo; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Pierce Brothers Griffin Mortuary, 1075 E. Daily Drive, Camarillo. Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, 1101 E. Ponderosa Drive, Camarillo. Private burial will follow.
Memorial donations may be made to the Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurse Assn.
