COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Wisconsin Green Bay Back in Show

The team that knocked Jason Kidd and California out of the NCAA tournament last year is headed back.

Wisconsin Green Bay (22-7) dominated inside behind Jeff Nordgaard’s 28 points and 13 rebounds and rolled to a 73-58 victory over Wright State to win the Midwestern Collegiate Conference tournament championship Tuesday night and its automatic NCAA berth at Dayton, Ohio.

“Last year we felt it (the NCAA berth) was expected because we had a solid team,” guard Chris Westlake said. “This year was a little more of a surprise. But we’re going in with the same attitude--we’re not going to back down from anyone.”

Wright State (13-17) was trying to join Florida International as NCAA tournament teams with losing records.

No. 23 Western Kentucky 82, Arkansas-Little Rock 79--Reserve Jeff Rogers scored eight of his 18 points down the stretch and came up with a loose ball in the final seconds as the Hilltoppers (26-3) beat the Trojans (17-12) to earn their third consecutive NCAA tournament bid in the final of the Sun Belt Conference tournament at Little Rock, Ark.

Cal State Los Angeles 70, Cal State Bakersfield 66--Rodney Harris scored 20 points as the Golden Eagles (17-11) won their first NCAA playoff game since 1959 by upsetting the Roadrunners (20-8) in overtime in a Division II regional game at Bakersfield.

College Basketball Notes

Gil Coleman, the basketball coach at Central Washington for five years, died of complications of cancer. He was 38. . . . Jack Rohan, Columbia’s basketball coach for 19 of the last 35 years, resigned after a season in which the Lions won four of 26 games. . . . Duquesne fired basketball coach John Carroll after only one winning season since 1989.
