SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO : High School Night Classes Considered

High school students in the Capistrano Unified School District could have the option of attending night classes next fall under a preliminary plan approved by trustees.

District staff will explore the practicality and costs of the plan, which is in the first stage.

About 300 students would be needed to make the program worth launching, said Tom Anthony, assistant superintendent of secondary schools.

The program would cost the district more for administration and utilities, but no additional teachers would have to be hired, Anthony said. Teachers who are interested would shift from days to the night schedule.

The classes, from 3:15 to 9:45 p.m., would be attractive to students who want to work during the morning or who perform better academically later in the day, district spokeswoman Jacqueline Price said.

The classes also would help alleviate expected crowding in the next few years at the district’s four high schools.

“It gives us a lot more flexibility,” Anthony said.

Each of the campuses has more than 2,000 students and are near capacity, Anthony said.
