Newbury Park High quarterback Chris Czernek completed 23 of 40 passes for 362 yards and four touchdowns and Newbury Park held off a late San Marcos comeback for a 32-27 nonleague victory Friday night at San Marcos.
The Panthers (2-0) rallied from a 20-19 second-half deficit and held on after the Royals (1-1) scored on a 66-yard pass play from Rand Holdren to Cory Leholm, and then recovered an on-side kick.
But they couldn’t move the ball.
Dajuan Hawkins, a 6-foot-5 wide receiver, led Newbury Park with eight catches for 141 yards and a touchdown. Pat Reddick had six catches for 65 yards and a touchdown.
Newbury Park limited San Marcos to 31 yards in the first half.
