SAN DIEGO — The suspect in the Tuesday night shooting of a veteran California Highway Patrol officer was identified as a 39-year-old transient from Arizona, but no motive for the attack has been revealed.
The suspect is David Edward Huzar of Glendale, Ariz. In accordance with CHP policy, the wounded officer’s name was not released.
The officer had spotted Huzar sitting in a car on a frontage road along Interstate 15 north of Escondido and was attempting to question him when Huzar shot him in the chest, according to Lt. Jerry Lipscomb of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department. The area where the shooting occurred is known for car thefts, Lipscomb said.
The officer returned fire, hitting Huzar several times. Both men were taken to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, where Huzar is listed in critical condition, the officer in serious but stable condition. A teen-age member of the CHP Explorer Scout program was riding with the officer when the shooting occurred but was not injured.
