PREP ROUNDUP : Mater Dei Girls Sweep Mira Costa in Volleyball

Mater Dei, ranked third in the Southern Section Division I poll, defeated second-ranked Manhattan Beach Mira Costa, 18-16, 15-7, 15-9, in girls’ volleyball Wednesday at Newport Harbor High.
Roberta Gehlke had 23 kills, Ami Orr had 11 digs and Laurie Layton had 45 assists for the Monarchs (4-0).
In other nonleague matches:
El Modena 3, Mission Viejo 0--Nicole Terry had 12 kills and six aces for host El Modena (6-0), which won, 15-1, 15-8, 15-6. Mission Viejo is 3-3.
Whittier Christian 3, Tustin 0--Joey Miller had 15 kills and Kristi Ralston added 10 for host Whittier Christian (3-1), which won, 15-3, 15-11, 15-5.
In Century League girls’ cross-country:
El Modena 21, Foothill 35--Jessica Dahlberg and Leslie Burton tied for first for top-ranked El Modena (2-0) at Irvine Park.
Sophomores Dahlberg and Burton covered the 3.1-mile course in 19 minutes 8 seconds. Katie Kennedy, a junior, finished 14 seconds behind her teammates to take third.
Greta Martinez was seventh-ranked Foothill’s top finisher, placing fourth in 19:36. The Knights dropped to 1-1 in league.
In the Freeway League:
Sunny Hills 15, Sonora 43--Allyson Kulak finished first in a time of 20:07 and Tkay Alvarez was second in 20:24 for Sunny Hills (3-0, 1-0) on its three-mile course.
Troy 22, Fullerton 36--Lisa Dunn won the three-mile race at Acacia Park in 20:38 for Troy (1-1, 0-1). Fullerton is 0-1 in league.
In the Freeway League:
Sunny Hills 18, Sonora 43--Ranen Bhattacharya finished first in a time of 16:33 and Louis Alvarez was second in 17:07 for Sunny Hills (2-1, 1-0) on its three-mile course.
Troy 26, Fullerton 29--Bart Zeydel won the three-mile race at Acacia Park in 17:02 for Troy (1-1, 0-1). Fullerton is 0-1 in league.
In nonleague girls’ tennis:
Garden Grove 13, Western 8--The Garden Grove doubles team won seven of nine sets. Tam Dang and Quynh Nguyen swept, 6-2, 7-6, 6-0, and Hong Le and Thi Ngo swept, 6-0, 6-4, 6-1, for the unbeaten Argonauts (8-0).
Newport Harbor 11, Beverly Hills 7--Emily Barker and Brooke Taylor swept in doubles, 6-4, 6-1, 6-1, for visiting Newport Harbor (6-1), which won eight of nine doubles sets. Newport Harbor is ranked fifth in Division I. Beverly Hills is ranked ninth in Division II.
Rosary 10, Los Alamitos 8--Rosary’s Eleanor Luzano came back from a 2-5 deficit and defeated Melissa Rosenthal, 7-5, in a key singles match.
The Royals (6-1), ranked seventh in Division III, also benefited from a 6-3, 6-1, 6-0 sweep by Michelle Hamilton and Amanda Mroz in doubles. Los Alamitos (2-4) is ranked third in Division II.
Woodbridge 16, Mater Dei 2--Natalie Exon did not lose a game in singles for second-ranked Woodbridge (9-0) and freshmen Michelle Stiefel and Danielle Hustedt swept at doubles, 6-4, 6-3, 6-1.
In nonleague boys’ water polo:
Foothill 14, Long Beach Wilson 9--Foothill, top-ranked in Division I, took control of the game by outscoring the defending champions, 4-1, in the third quarter.
Rob Arroyo and Brian Brown had four goals each and sophomore goalkeeper Nick Ellis stopped seven shots for the Knights (9-0). Adam Wright scored three goals for Wilson (6-2), ranked third in Division I.
Huntington Beach 25, La Quinta 3--Tony Driessen scored six goals and Anthony Driessen added five for visiting Huntington Beach (5-6), which led, 10-0, after one quarter. La Quinta is 1-2.
Irvine 16, Fountain Valley 9--Chris Vyn scored three of his seven goals in the second quarter to help host Irvine (5-8) take a 9-5 lead at halftime.
