ROUNDUP : Five Nordhoff Runners Whip Frontier League

The Nordhoff High boys’ cross-country team put on an impressive display of group running Wednesday, sweeping the top five places in the first Frontier League meet of the season at Steckel Park in Santa Paula.
Sophomore Victor Ochoa and senior Will Bernaldo finished first and second with course-record times of 15 minutes 49 seconds over the three-mile distance to pace the two-time defending state Division III champions to a perfect 15-point total. Moorpark finished second with 46 points, followed by Santa Paula (90), Calabasas (103), Santa Clara (107) and Malibu (no score).
Omar Vega, who set the previous course record of 16:05 in 1993, placed third in 15:50, followed by teammates Dusty Herman (15:56) and Mason Moore (15:57).
St. Francis 20, Loyola 35--Kevin Koeper and Andy VanOrden placed first and second to pace the Golden Knights to a surprisingly easy victory in the Mission League meet at Crescenta Valley Park.
St. Francis Coach Tim Weir said last week that Loyola deserved to be favored in the meet, but the Golden Knights took five of the top eight places to win easily.
Koeper, third in last year’s Southern Section Division III championships, timed 15:46 over the three-mile course with VanOrden at 16:08. Steve Garcia (17:00) and Scott Bergen (17:16) placed fourth and fifth for defending league champion St. Francis (5-0, 3-0).
Monroe 32, San Pedro 36, University 46--Ali BenMohamed of Monroe timed 16:50 over the three-mile course in the nonleague meet at Pierce College.
GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY
Nordhoff 18, Moorpark, 47, Thacher 136, Santa Clara 193, Calabasas 288--Sophomore Elaine Canchola set a course record of 18:16 over the three-mile distance at Steckel Park as Nordhoff swept the first four places and seven of the top 10 in the season’s first Frontier League meet.
Terrah Chapin (19:08), Beth Zacher (20:10) and Bridie Hatch (20:21) placed second, third and fourth for the Rangers, the second-ranked team in the state Division III poll.
BOYS’ WATER POLO
Crescenta Valley 22, Arcadia 4--Joey Bennett scored seven goals in the first half for the Falcons in a Pacific League opener at Arcadia.
Bennett finished with eight goals and Eric Appelin added three for Crescenta Valley (12-1, 1-0). Eleven players scored for Crescenta Valley.
GIRLS’ TENNIS
Chaminade 18, Simi Valley 0--Freshman Teresa Galido won three matches without dropping a game as the Eagles (6-0) dominated the nonleague match.
GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL
Thousand Oaks d. Camarillo--15-6, 15-1, 16-14--Michelle Stevenson had seven kills and Crystal Crawford added six kills as the Lancers (3-1, 3-1) won a Marmonte League match at Thousand Oaks.
Denelle Arnold led Camarillo (3-3, 1-3) with four kills.
Providence d. Holy Family, 15-5, 15-10, 15-7--Danielle Botz had 11 kills and Angie Diaz added eight aces for the Pioneers (2-2) in a nonleague match at Providence.
Viewpoint d. L.A. Lutheran, 15-6, 15-3, 15-8--Jocy Harris had nine aces to pace the Patriots in the Heritage League sweep. Viewpoint is 4-3, 4-0 in league play. L.A. Lutheran is 3-2, 1-2.
MEN’S SOCCER
CS Northridge 2, Cal Poly Pomona 0--Amy Gill scored her second goal of the season in the first half, and Heather Schou scored her first in the second half in the nonconference match at Northridge. The Matadors (3-3-2) outshot the Broncos, 19-1. Goalies Kim Kuhn and Dawn Lenard combined for the team’s fourth shutout. The Broncos are 2-6.
Cal Lutheran 9, Occidental 0--Brian Collins scored three goals in the first half as the Kingsmen won a SCIAC match at Occidental. Jan Hammervold scored two goals in the second half for Cal Lutheran (4-4-1, 2-0).
Four other Cal Lutheran players scored against Occidental (2-7, 1-1).
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Cal Lutheran 2, Occidental 1--Laura Heifner scored in the 68th minute as the Regals won at Occidental.
Jill Gallegos scored in the 40th minute for the Regals (8-1-1, 4-0 in SCIAC), who outshot Occidental, 24-6.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
El Camino d. Pierce, 15-0, 15-13, 15-4--LaCretia Smith had 14 kills and Alex Rigg had 12 digs for El Camino in a nonconference match. Christine Ryan had three aces and Danelle Gallo had four kills for the Brahmas (1-4). The Warriors are 7-0.
