PREP ROUNDUP : Anaheim Boys, Brea Girls Win Titles

Anaheim ended Brea Olinda’s three-year reign as Orange League boys’ cross-country champions by winning Wednesday at Craig Park in Fullerton.

The Colonists edged the Wildcats, 36-41, to win the title. They also had a 5-0 dual-meet record this season.

“They’ve had it the last three years,” first-year Coach Carlos Venegas said. “No longer. Now it’s Anaheim’s turn.”

Valencia senior Carlos Rojas won the individual title, running the 3.1-mile course in 16 minutes 29 seconds to defeat runner-up Patricio Mejia by 10 seconds. Valencia finished third with 61 points.

Edgar Reyes of Anaheim (16:46), Mark Montijo of Western (16:52) and Mike Case of Brea Olinda (16:53) were the next three finishers.

Rojas, who also won the league title last fall, controlled the pace early in Wednesday’s race, and Brea Olinda led the team race at the mile mark.

But the Colonists took charge during the second mile.

“They did basically what I wanted,” Venegas said. “They kind of helped each other.”

The Brea Olinda girls dominated the competition by sweeping the top five places and placing all seven runners among the top nine. This was the Brea girls’ fourth consecutive league title.

Freshman Christy Burrell led the way for the Wildcats with a 21:41 time.

Michelle Richman (21:48), Madalyn Macias (22:04), Candy Kemp (22:06) and Jenny Griffin (22:07) finished second through fifth.
