VENTURA : City Buys Rail Line for Bike, Hiking Trail

The city of Ventura has acquired six miles of rail line between Foster Park and Main Street that will be used to create a combination bike, hiking and horse trail, city officials announced.
Escrow closed this week, allowing the city to take over the rail line’s title from Southern Pacific railroad, city officials said. The rail line cost $1 million, half of which was paid with a federal grant.
At its regular meeting Monday, the City Council will consider approving an agreement with a Ventura-based engineering firm to design construction plans for the trail. Construction is expected to cost $2.5 million.
The Ventura River Trail will connect the Ojai Valley Trail at Foster Park to the Omer Rains Trail at the Ventura County Fairgrounds.
