MISSION VIEJO — Trabuco Hills took advantage of Mission Viejo’s early mistakes and then held off the Diablos’ late surge to win, 20-12, in a South Coast League game Friday night at Trabuco Hills High School.
With Trabuco Hills trailing, 3-0, early in the second quarter, Billy Ortiz blocked a Mission Viejo punt. The ball came to rest on the Diablos’ two-yard line. Bryan Carter ran it in one play later to give Trabuco Hills a 6-3 lead.
Trabuco Hills’ defense stepped up on the next series when Billy Benda returned an interception 22 yards to Mission Viejo’s 18. But Trabuco Hills had to settle for Brighton Junge’s 28-yard field goal.
Mission Viejo (0-9, 0-4) got caught napping on the ensuing kickoff as Trabuco Hills’ Danny Garcia recovered an unattended ball on Mission Viejo’s 18-yard line.
Three running plays later, Carter scored on a two-yard plunge. A two-point conversion, gave Trabuco Hills (3-6, 2-2) a 17-6 halftime lead.
Mission Viejo quarterback Greg Carr led a charge late in the fourth quarter and Chris Harrie scored on a one-yard run. Carr completed 14 of 26 passes for 146 yards and rushed for 45.
