ANGELES NATIONAL FOREST — Two men who tried to carjack a couple’s car Monday ended up abducting the pair, who were later found in Orange and Los Angeles counties, officials said.
The two attackers accosted the couple in the car just before 8 a.m. outside a Downey apartment complex in the 11500 block of Haro Avenue, Downey Police Sgt. Pete Novakoff said.
The victims were driven to Garden Grove, where the male victim was ordered to get out of the car. The abductors then fled with the woman in the car. One attacker was then dropped off in Santa Ana while the other man drove to Angeles National Forest with the 24-year-old woman, Novakoff said.
While on California Highway 39, the woman and the captor apparently were struggling over a gun, which shot a round into the ground.
Deputies “noticed two people struggling in a parked vehicle, then heard a shot fired,” Novakoff said.
After the woman disarmed him and he saw deputies arrive, the attacker fled. The woman was found holding the gun and uninjured, Novakoff said.
Los Angeles sheriff’s officials searched the area until 6 p.m. but didn’t find him. Downey police are still investigating.
