Ortiz finished sixth in the state wrestling meet at 189 pounds as a senior at Huntington Beach High in 1993. He then took two years off from school to work but returned to the classroom and wrestling mat this fall. Ortiz was strong from the start and went on to win the state community college title at 191 pounds. Ortiz reached the final of the state meet with three pins, then won the title match, 19-8, Saturday at Chabot College. He finished 30-2 this season.
