Autumn ends and winter begins at the winter solstice at 12:17 a.m. Friday morning, Dec. 22. This day marks the southernmost rising and setting position of the sun and its lowest noontime elevation (32.5 degrees in Los Angeles). It is also the shortest day of the year.
